Lo-fi garage rock band The Strange Boys have earned comparisons to The Rolling Stones and Chuck Berry and have performed with acts such as Spoon and Black Lips. Opening the show is Gentleman Jesse and His Men, Atlanta’s lo-fi garage pop unit.

Comedian Kevin Shea – 9/9 @ CDU

NBC’s 2009 Stand Up for Diversity Winner Kevin Shea will be performing stand up at Club Downunder on September 9! The Korean-born comedian has performed on Comedy Central, HBO, and Jimmy Kimmel Live.

El Ten Eleven – 9/11 @ CDU

Though consisting of only two members, El Ten Eleven craft intricate, densely layered music that belies their diminutive size. Utilizing only drums, a double-necked guitar and an array of pedals, the duo perform energetic, highly danceable tunes to keep you moving all night. LA upstart Baths shares stylistic hallmarks of his contemporaries but the inclusion of his own voice in a singer/songwriter manner makes him something of an iconoclast.

Look Mexico – 8/26 @ CDU

Tallahassee natives Look Mexico have a unique harmony and catchy, heartfelt lyrics that have consistently pleased crowds at Club Downunder. Openers Young Buffalos draw influence from West African polyrhythmic drumming and the harmony-laden pop of the Beach Boys and Animal Collective.

Janelle Monae with The Blow – 8/21 at 7 p.m. on the Union Green

Union Productions is excited to present Janelle Monae with special guest The Blow as this year’s Last Call Before Fall performers! The event will take place on Saturday, August 21 on the Oglesby Union Green. The Blow will perform at 7 p.m. and Janelle Monae will play at 8 p.m.

Janelle Monae, who has been called a “true visionary” by Sean “Diddy” Combs, has combined genres such as funk, pop, jazz and soul to create “an organic symphonic sound”. Her first full-length album, “The ArchAndroid”, was released in May; the first single, “Tightrope”, features Outkast’s Big Boi.

Opening for Janelle Monae is The Blow, the Portland, Oregon-based electro-pop project of Mikhaele Yvonne Maricich.

The Dirty Guv’nahs – 9/1 @ CDU

Rock, country, blues and soul converge when Knoxville, Tennessee’s The Dirty Guv’nahs take the stage. The bands’ big songs and big performances have helped The Dirty Guv’nahs earn the title of Knoxville, Tennessee’s Best Band two years in a row, as well as landed them performances at festivals such as Bonnaraoo and Next Big Nashville.

Union Productions is FSU’s student-run programming board. We host around 125 events every year. In the past year alone, we’ve welcomed musicians such as Mae, The Pains of Being Pure at Heart, Neko Case, and Ted Leo & The Pharmacists, just to name a few. Comedians Wyatt Cenac, Neil Hamburger, Tiffany Haddish, and Nick Kroll showcased their own unique brands of humor at Club Downunder. Along with concerts and comedy shows, we hosted a multitude of special events! Some of our favorites included Geek Night; Rewind: The Evolution of the Hip-Hop DJ; a Murder Mystery Party; a drum circle; and An Evening with Christian Lander, author of the blog “Stuff White People Like”. The best part? Our events are always free for FSU students!
