MENOMENA @ CDU 11/2

Wednesday, August 29th, 2007

Menomena are an experimental rock band from Portland, Oregon, made up of Brent Knopf on guitar, keyboards, glockenspiel; Justin Harris on bass, guitar, baritone sax and alto sax; and Danny Seim on percussion. All members of the band share singing duties.

Their newest album, Friend and Foe, was released in 2007 to relative critical acclaim — while some websites like Pitchfork Media praised the album for its effective modular pop, others like PopMatters criticized it for presenting a sense of feigned maturity. Their record release show was held in their home town of Portland, Oregon.

The band’s name was chosen for “the way it rolls off the tongue, sexually, or something” and has no specific meaning, although it is often assumed to refer to the Piero Umiliani song “Mah Nà Mah Nà”, a staple of The Muppet Show. A recent audioclip from SpotDJ had Brent stating that the band name was a contraction of the words “Men” and “Phenomena”. This is most likely a joke.

DISCO BISCUITS @ THE MOON 10/11

    Wednesday, August 29th, 2007

The Disco Biscuits have entered their second decade as one of the most successful acts on the jam-band circuit. In the years since the band sprang out of the University of Pennsylvania party scene in the mid-’90s, the Disco Biscuits have brought together the worlds of jam bands and electronic music with its “trance-fusion” sound that mixes the free-form improvisations of jazz with the hypnotic rhythms which provided the soundtrack for rave culture. In the process, the band has garnered critical acclaim and a loyal fanbase.

The Disco Biscuits have four studio albums. In 1996 they released their debut, Encephalous Crime. 1998 brought the release of The Uncivilized Area. Their third, They Missed the Perfume, hit the streets in 2001. The 2002 effort, Senor Boombox, was named the “best studio record of 2002″ by Relix magazine and one of the “10 best Jam band records of all-time”by Guitar Player.

Opening for Disco Biscuits is Tea Leaf Green.

    STATE RADIO @ CDU 10/12

    Wednesday, August 29th, 2007

Before forming State Radio, Chad Stokes was well known to US college students as the voice behind rock band Dispatch. Forged from Stokes’ artistic response to the social and political fires burning across the globe, State Radio come armed with progressive political ideals and an infectious blend of rock, punk, and reggae beats, Stokes and band mates - Chuck Fay on bass and Mad Dog on drums - are creating songs with a conscience.

Year of The Crow, the second release on State Radio’s own Ruff Shod Records, continues to be the band’s best forum for expressing their thoughts on today’s political landscape. “Guantanamo,” the opening track, rails against the atrocities committed at the famous detention center. “CIA” and “Gang of Thieves” highlight the misappropriation of funds and the abuse of power reported in the newspaper every day. Recorded at Peter Gabriel’s Real World studios in Wiltshire, England with the acclaimed producer Tchad Blake (Pearl Jam, Soul Coughing and Peter Gabriel), Year of The Crow captures the band’s live energy and spirit.
