In need of a good laugh? Comedy Night is where you’ll want to be on Friday, July 30. We’re bringing in some of the funniest comedians in Tallahassee to make you lol! Doors open at 8:30 p.m. and the first comedian will hit the stage at 9 p.m..

Janelle Monae with The Blow – 8/21 @ Union Green

Union Productions is excited to present Janelle Monae with special guest The Blow as this year’s Last Call Before Fall performers! The event will take place on Saturday, August 21 on the Oglesby Union Green. The Blow will perform at 7 p.m. and Janelle Monae will play at 8 p.m.

Janelle Monae, who has been called a “true visionary” by Sean “Diddy” Combs, has combined genres such as funk, pop, jazz and soul to create “an organic symphonic sound”. Her first full-length album, “The ArchAndroid”, was released in May; the first single, “Tightrope”, features Outkast’s Big Boi.

Opening for Janelle Monae is The Blow, the Portland, Oregon-based electro-pop project of Mikhaele Yvonne Maricich.

Union Productions is FSU’s student-run programming board. We host around 125 events every year. In the past year alone, we’ve welcomed musicians such as Mae, The Pains of Being Pure at Heart, Neko Case, and Ted Leo & The Pharmacists, just to name a few. Comedians Wyatt Cenac, Neil Hamburger, Tiffany Haddish, and Nick Kroll showcased their own unique brands of humor at Club Downunder. Along with concerts and comedy shows, we hosted a multitude of special events! Some of our favorites included Geek Night; Rewind: The Evolution of the Hip-Hop DJ; a Murder Mystery Party; a drum circle; and An Evening with Christian Lander, author of the blog “Stuff White People Like”. The best part? Our events are always free for FSU students!

Minnijean Brown Trickey – 4/14 @ The Union Ballrooms

Florida State University has the immense pleasure of welcoming Minnijean Brown Trickey to share her inspiring story. She was one of the nine African-American students allowed to enter the racially segregated Little Rock Central High School and was in the center of the fight to desegregate it. Not too long after she entered the school, she was suspended for spilling a bowl of chili on a white girl, and later expelled for verbally insulting another female white student. Currently, she works as an activist for minority rights and has served as the Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Department of the Interior during the Clinton administration. Minnijean has received several awards including the Congressional Gold Medal, Wolf Award, and Spingarn Medal. She has also been depicted in a documentary and two made-for-television films. She has had extraordinary experiences in her life, and has had a large impact on making society the way it is today.
