Union Productions welcomes Tapes n’ Tapes to Club Downunder Friday, October 7! Formed in the winter of 2003, Minneapolis indie rock classicists Tapes ’n Tapes almost immediately found success on indie music blogging sites after the release of their debut album The Loon. Amid positive reviews and nearly constant gigging, the band eventually signed with XL Records, re-releasing The Loon and adding two more albums, most recently 2011’s Outside, to their resume. Tapes ‘n Tapes’ musical style varies in tempo and in influence, ranging from fast-paced polka renditions to the slower, more blues-influenced songs. They’re partly experimental with a bit of psychedelic and hint of blues, but overall, Tapes n’ Tapes makes incredibly catchy music that is fun to hear live.
Opening for Tapes ‘n Tapes is Howler, a post-punk lo-fi band also quickly rising to fame from Minneapolis. Frontman Jordan Gatesmith, previously of Total Babe, describes the band as “surf-thrash”, and claims to have started the band out of boredom, unaware that this side project would grow to overshadow his original band. Their young and reckless style of playing mixes with a darkly romantic undercurrent.
